Competition Information

College level students in Operations Management are invited to participate in the 5th Annual Student Case Study Competition sponsored by the Southwest District of APICS, The Association for Operations Management, to be held in San Diego, CA the weekend of February 11-12, 2011. APICS, a professional organization, builds operations management excellence in individuals and enterprises through superior education and training, internationally recognized certifications, comprehensive resources, and a worldwide network of accomplished industry professionals.

I think employers that know of APICS's reputation are impressed that college students have taken the initiative to participate in such a grueling activity.

How the Competition Works

Participants in the competition will be provided with a real life case study from a company faced with specific operations management problems at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 11. Teams of students will meet to develop solutions that will then be presented to a team of judges in written form as well as an oral presentation to other students and operations professionals from APICS Southwest District. Teams will be formed based on all attending students and may be a mixture of students from all schools represented. Judging criteria will be provided to the students prior to beginning the case study. Preliminary judging will occur at 8 p.m. on Friday evening. Final judging will occur on Sat. morning. Prizes will be awarded immediately following lunch on Saturday. Prize money will be awarded to all participating teams.

Students are encouraged to bring their own computers, resource materials, and a memory stick or flash memory for submission of their solution. We will provide a printer for final printing.

I found the whole experience to be empowering by the fact that we are given very little time to do a great amount of [work]… I think it is a unique way to learn how to work with others that are stressed out and tired and still presenting a good final product.

Competitors must be students, who have studied Operations Management at the college level and are willing to become APICS student members to participate in the October APICS Scholars Program.

Great way to learn how to use the knowledge you learn in class. Forces you to come up with an idea under intense pressure, manage your time, and to explain your ideas in a concise manner.

Location

Date

Friday, Feb 11th at 9:00 a.m. until Saturday, Feb. 12th, 3 p.m. If leaving by airplane, please do not plan your departure time earlier than 5 p.m. on Feb. 12th.

It was a great and exciting experiance. It is also a good way to compare your education with that of students from other schools and to practice our skills in a real world environment to see how we measure up. It is a great way to develop strong team skills.

Arrangements

Hotel rooms WILL BE the responsibility of the students. APICS will arrange a special rate for teams that register by Friday, Jan 21, 2011.

If you have difficulty registering a team for the competition before Jan. 21, you might want to reserve a room in anticipation and then cancel the room if a team is not formed by the registration deadline of Mon., Jan 31.

Teams will make their own hotel reservations. APICS will provide light foods on Friday evening at a hospitality reception, Saturday continental breakfast, and lunch to each student. Faculty advisors are also invited to attend and are expected to cover their own expenses. Friday evening's hospitality and Saturday's breakfast & lunch are covered for all.

Additional information regarding the event logistics will be provided on the District website www.apicsssouthwest.org along with weekly updates by e-mail directly to students and faculty advisors who register for the competition.

This competition not only gives students the opportunity to apply concepts they have been studying and see how well their knowledge stacks up against students from other top schools. Also, it is a well respected competition and source of talent development in the Supply Chain/Operations field. When my employer found out I had done the competition, he expressed a lot of interest in the schools that had competed.

Why you want to enter

The competition will be part of the APICS Southwest District meeting where participating students will have the opportunity to compare their educational experiences with other students, utilize their classroom education in solving real world problems and network with Operations Management professionals. All teams will receive some prize money; winning teams will receive larger prizes. Bring your resume to share with our professional members & sponsoring companies during networking opportunities.

The experience to be introduced to a problem and immediately deal with it-- Often in class work we prepare for the entire semester for a project such as a major case study. This was a great opportunity to take the knowledge I have, come up a solution and run with it.

What is different for 2011

• Registration Fees for all teams: All teams must pay a registration fee to participate. Teams from schools within the Southwest District boundaries (see FAQS document, question #1) will pay $250/team and schools from outside the Southwest District will pay $500/team.

• Registration Process: for students, this is now a 3 step process where the team is assigned a team number, then individual students sign up, then the team fee is sent in.

Sponsorships from companies are available to support the students. Contact Barry Solomon or Ellen Kane for more information about sponsorships.

The APICS competition was an amazing, challenging, and valuable learning experience. It provided a great opportunity for networking with students from other universities and with APICS professionals. It also provided the ability for us to take what we have learned, and apply it to a real-world problem.

This competition forces its competitors to function in a highly realistic environment where they must rely on each other, their creativity, and their education to solve problems that they will face in industry. This type of experience is invaluable to students, especially as undergrads, but is unfortunately rare which makes this conference all the more valuable.

2010 West Coast Student Case Competition Winners

Thirty-five (35) students from 5 different schools competed as 7 teams in the 4th Annual Student Case Competition hosted by the Southwest District of APICS during the February 19-20, 2010 district meeting in Phoenix, AZ. As in previous years, there were 2 separate divisions – a Graduate and an Undergraduate division. 5 teams competed in the graduate division, and 2 teams in the Undergrad division. Arizona State University swept both divisions by taking top honors. 2nd place was California State University-Northridge (CSUN) in the Undergrad division and Boise State University in the Graduate division.

Students were given the case at 9 a.m. on Friday morning and turned in the case study paper (2 pages) and an 8 minute PowerPoint presentation at 6 p.m. that same evening. They then presented orally, the case to a team of 6 judges who selected the top 2 teams from each division to compete in the Final round of judging on Sat. morning. The oral judges for the final round were the chapter leaders of the Southwest District APICS chapters.

The case was a fictitious global company that was facing severe quality problems and lack of control of some of their suppliers and out-sourced production. The students were told to make recommendations to the executives of the company on ways to solve their problems. Students competed for cash awards provided by the chapters of the Southwest District. The Undergraduate 1st place team was also awarded guaranteed acceptance into the APICS 2010 Scholars Program and transportation to the APICS International Conference in Nashville, TN in October, 2010.

Other schools represented were Thunderbird School of Global Management which sent 2 graduate teams. A special presentation was made by some High School students from Paradise Valley who assisted with the competition logistics and elected to also solve the case problem. Congratulations to all the students who competed! You are a credit to your schools and will make wonderful Operations Management professionals!

2009 West Coast Student Case Competition Winners

36 students from 7 different schools competed as 9 teams in the 3nd Annual Student Case Competition hosted by the Southwest District of APICS during the February 6-7, 2009 district meeting in Torrance, CA. For the first time there were 2 separate divisions – a graduate and an Undergraduate division. 5 Undergrad teams competed for the honor of representing our district at the October 2009 APICS International Conference in Toronto, Canada. The CSUN Undergraduate team took 1st place and the winning team members are: Christa Elias, David Roman, Eric Bair, Kaloyan Borisov, and Roger Grato. 2nd place in the Undergrad division was won by Arizona State University (team 3). In the Graduate division, 1st place was taken by University of Arizona, and 2nd place was the graduate team from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

The competition was fierce as all teams had about 15 hours to work on the case study which was a real-life Inventory problem. They had to write a 3 page paper and create a 6-minute PowerPoint presentation. Then they presented their solutions orally to the chapter leaders of the Southwest district APICS chapters. Other schools represented were Chico State, Thunderbird School of Global Management, and University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV). Some of the 2008 participants and winners were present to assist district staff with this competition. Congratulations to all the students who competed! You are a credit to your schools and will make wonderful Operations Management professionals!
